Rostock Academy of Music and Drama
The Rostock Academy of Music and Drama (Hochschule für Musik und Theater – HMT) was founded in the year 1994. However, the college looks back upon a considerably longer history: Since 1947 musicians have been educated in the Hanseatic city. There has been a drama school in Rostock since 1968. In the 1980s this school was integrated into the "Ernst Busch" College of Dramatic Art in Berlin .
Since HMT set out on the path to independence, a great deal has happened. Since 2001, college students have been educated in the lavishly restored Katharinenstift, a former convent in the old town of Rostock. Presently approximately 450 future musicians, actors and pedagogues from over 35 countries are studying at HMT. In addition to the classical courses of study such as Music and Drama, Music Pedagogic and a course called Pop/World Music are taught. Not only do the students at HMT appreciate the practice-oriented training but also the pleasant atmosphere and the support provided when starting up a profession.
In the framework of topical research projects, the scientists and artists of HMT deal, among others, with the automatic realisation of tempi in audio signals or they investigate the impact of the globalisation processes on the music culture in north- eastern Europe.
Both research and education at HMT profit from the college’s engagement in the Association of Baltic Academies of Music (ABAM), a joint venture of 17 leading music colleges from the Baltic Sea region and from Israel. Internationality is also characteristic of the master courses that take place every year as part of the "summer campus".
During recent years HMT has made a name for itself through its ambitious and multifarious programme of events: With approximately 200 concerts and shows every year the college enriches the cultural life of the largest city in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
