Hochschule Wismar – University of Applied Sciences: Technology, Business and Design– looks back on a long academic tradition. In 1908 the "Ingenieurakademie Wismar" (Engineer Academy) was founded in the historical Hanseatic city. The present day Hochschule Wismaremerged in 1992 from the Technische Hochschule Wismar (Institute of Technology), the Ingenieurschule für Seefahrt(Naval Engineering School) in Rostock-Warnemünde and the Fachschule für angewandte Kunst(Technical College for Applied Arts) in Heiligendamm.
Today the University of Applied Sciences of the Hanseatic city disposes of departments for Business Sciences and Engineering Sciences as well as for Design and offers more than 40 courses of study. With over 5,000 students this educational institution is the largest university in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. A particular hallmark of the university is the crosslinking of the three focal points: Engineering, Business and Design.
The well-established field of Navigation is not located in Wismar but in Rostock-Warnemünde. Here also stands the impressive construction distinguished for being the only maritime simulation centre in the world where nautical and technical ship operation can be simulated with the simultaneous involvement of support from onshore traffic control. The field of Navigation dates back to the "Großherzogliche Navigationsschule" (Navigation Academy of the Grand-Duke) that began teaching activities in Wustrow (Fischland) in1846. Another branch of the university is located in Malchow on the island of Poel. In addition to the outstandingly well equipped labs found there is the nature trail to sustainable raw materials and the show garden, every year an inviting spot to visit for the summer flower show.
For teaching and research at the Wismar Fachhochschule multidisciplinarity, applied learning and international cooperation are of vital importance. New ground is being broken in teaching for example with the Master degree course Architectural Lighting Design as well as with the dual course of studies Construction Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Ship Operation Engineering. Among the innovative offers is also the cross-disciplinary International Class. Close international contacts that, for example, exist with universities in Polish Szczecin or with Chinese Shenyang enrich research and teaching. The transfer of technology is attended to by the Forschungs-GmbH Wismar (Research Company). The Wismar International Graduation Services GmbH (WINGS) is responsible for the implementation of development training and distant learning offered by the university. Both companies are 100 percent subsidiaries of the university.
To this day it is still often difficult to make studies or a job compatible with a family. In an effort to change that the Hochschule Wismar undertook a project already in 2004 as the first university in northeast Germany to subject itself to the audit entitled Family Friendly University. A Day Care Centre for children has already been set up on campus. The broad target agreement includes among other plans setting up special studies for young parents.
